STRAY DOG IN SOFIA*

Dogs with hanging tongues
run the streets
like naked human hearts.

Digging in the garbage,
they transfer vermin.
At night, to cheer themselves,
they gather in packs
and become dangerous.
But in the daylight they look sadly at you,
begging for attention
or a gevrek crumb.

Habit is a strict master.
He turns dogs into human beings.

 

* Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria. Gevrek is a kind of bun looking and tasting like a larger bagel.
