SEAWEED OF SLEEP

It is night. The shadow of a bough
is swinging on the ceiling.
I am a child,
sleeping.
I can hear a conversation
in the next room.

And the dancing shadow
becomes this conversation.

I can hear a distant music.
Somewhere the bodies
of boys and girls touch.

And the talking shadow
becomes this dance.

A car passes down below.
The lights are golden fruit
falling from the shadow.

And the tree moves on the ceiling
as if through the seasons.

Now I know
that I am this shadow:
The tree is dreaming me.
